15: Ataque Descubierto

A discovered attack is a tactical idea in which one piece moves and, by doing so, reveals the attack of another piece that was hidden behind it.

Key idea: when you move one piece, you unleash the power of another piece that was blocked.

How does it work?

For a discovered attack to exist, these conditions must be present:

  • Two of your pieces are lined up (with a rook, bishop or queen behind)
  • The front piece is blocking that attack
  • When that piece moves… the attack is revealed

It is one of the most powerful tactics in chess because you can create two threats in a single move.

📍 Clear example

  • White bishop on c4
  • White knight on d5
  • Black king on g8

The knight on d5 is blocking the bishop’s diagonal.

If the knight moves, the bishop on c4 gives check directly to the king.

The attack was not visible… until one piece moved.

🔥 The strongest form: discovered check

If the discovered attack gives check, it becomes one of the strongest moves in chess.

Why?

  • Your opponent is forced to respond to the check
  • They cannot defend other threats at the same time

This makes it possible to combine attack with material gain.

⚠️ Common mistake

Many players fail to notice that one piece is “covering” an attack.

Then the opponent moves that piece… and an unexpected threat appears.

Do not only look at what you attack now.
Look at what you would attack if a piece moved.

🧠 How to spot it

Before you move, ask yourself:

  • Do I have pieces lined up?
  • Is one piece blocking that attack?
  • What happens if I move it?

🎯 Mini exercise

Find a move where:

  • You move one piece
  • And another piece immediately starts attacking something

If that happens… you have found a discovered attack.

✅ Quick summary

  • A discovered attack reveals a hidden attack.
  • It depends on the alignment of pieces.
  • It can become a discovered check, which is very powerful.

From now on, do not only look at direct moves… look at the attacks that appear when a piece moves.

📒 Notebook

Write down one position where you created a discovered attack.
