12- El Ataque Doble (Fork) – Gana dos cosas a la vez

The fork is one of the most powerful tactics in chess. It happens when one move attacks two pieces at the same time, forcing your opponent to lose material.

Key idea: if you attack two things at once, your opponent can usually save only one.

Why is it so important?

  • You can win material very easily
  • It usually does not require deep calculation
  • It appears constantly in real games

It is one of the first tactical ideas you should learn to recognise.

📍 Classic example with a knight

  • White knight on e5
  • Black king on g6
  • Black queen on f7

The knight moves to e5 and attacks both:

  • the king (check)
  • the queen

Black must move the king… and loses the queen.

This type of double attack is called a fork, and it is especially strong when done with a knight.

Other double attacks

Knights are not the only pieces that can create forks:

  • A queen can attack two pieces at once
  • A bishop can put pressure on two diagonals
  • A rook can attack two pieces along the same line

But the knight is often the most dangerous, because it jumps and is harder to defend against.

🧠 How to spot a fork

Before you move, ask yourself:

  • Can I attack two pieces at the same time?
  • Is there a check combined with an attack on another piece?
  • Can I move my knight to a strong square?

🎯 Mini exercise

Look for a move where you can:

  • give check
  • and attack another important piece at the same time

If you can do both, you have probably found a fork.

Many beginners lose pieces because they do not see this type of move in time.

✅ Quick summary

  • A fork attacks two things at once.
  • Your opponent can usually defend only one.
  • The knight is the most dangerous piece for this kind of tactic.

From now on, every time you play, try to see whether you can attack two pieces at once.

📒 Notebook

Write down one position where you managed to create a fork.
