8.- No regales la dama

If there's one piece that beginners lose most often due to impatience, it's the queen.

The queen is powerful. It moves a lot. It attacks in all directions. And that's precisely why many players bring it out too early.

Bringing out the queen too early often leads to disaster.

1️⃣ The typical mistake

The beginner sees a small threat and thinks:

“I'm going to bring out the queen and attack something quickly.”

But the opponent responds by attacking the queen with minor pieces (knights, bishops, or pawns).

And suddenly the queen:

  • Has to flee.
  • Loses tempo.
  • Is badly placed.
  • Or can even get trapped.

2️⃣ Why does this happen?

Because the queen seems invincible.

But in the opening:

  • There are many pieces on the board.
  • The diagonals and files are closed.
  • Minor pieces develop easily by attacking it.

A queen that is too far advanced is a target.

3️⃣ The smart rule

Before bringing out the queen in the opening, ask yourself:

  • Am I developing my pieces first?
  • Is my king safe?
  • Can my queen be easily attacked?

If the answer isn't clear, wait.

Minor pieces first. The queen later.

4️⃣ Practical example

👑 The advanced queen looks strong… but can be a target

In this position, the white queen is placed in an advanced area of the board and, at first glance, it seems to "dominate" the game.

But if we look carefully, the typical beginner's problem appears: the opponent can attack the queen with minor pieces (especially with knights), forcing it to move again and again.

Consequence: every time the queen has to retreat, the opponent gains a "tempo" of development. And in the opening, losing tempo usually costs dearly.

While the queen goes back and forth, your minor pieces may remain undeveloped and your king remains in the center. That's why, in most games: knights and bishops first… the queen later.

Mental pause (5 seconds):
Can the opponent attack my queen easily? If the answer is yes, it's probably too early to bring it out.

The queen seems strong, but it's an easy target.
While it's being attacked, the opponent develops.

✅ Clear summary

  • Don't bring out the queen too early.
  • Develop knights and bishops first.
  • Protect your king before attacking.

Losing the queen due to impatience is one of the most expensive beginner's mistakes.
